What Life is Like in Canterbury

Canterbury boasts some of the most tranquil scenery in Connecticut. Mature trees line the two-lane roads throughout the town, and on sunny days, the views are worthy of postcards. Residents enjoy the beautiful landscapes as well as the amenities, of which there are plenty.

Points of Interest in Canterbury

Prudence Crandall Museum

In 1832, Prudence Crandall, a Quaker schoolteacher, opened the first academy for young black women in Canterbury. Young ladies from all over Connecticut, Massachusetts, and surrounding states flocked to this school to receive an education. Though Crandall and her students endured harassment from local residents and the Connecticut General Assembly, which passed the "Black Law" prohibiting the education of black children from out of state, Crandall persisted in teaching. Mobs forced the school to close 1834.

Though the academy was only open for a short period of time, Prudence Crandall helped change the course of history. In 1995, the Connecticut General Assembly designated Prudence Crandall as the state's official heroine. The Prudence Crandall Museum is now a National Historic Landmark.

Finnish American Heritage Society

Canterbury's Finnish residents established the Finnish Hall in the 1920s to host cultural celebrations and community events. Today, the Finnish American Heritage Society is active in Canterbury, hosting events that include an annual chicken barbecue, cooking demonstrations, Kalevala Day, Fine Art & Craft Exhibit & Sale (FACES at FAHS), a Pikkujoulu celebration, and more.
