Windham and Willimantic (which is a community nestled within the town of Windham) together have created a town lifestyle that revolves around world-class education, small local businesses, rich history, and community fun. Points of Interest in Windham & Willimantic
Windham Textile & History Museum
In the 1820s, factories were constructed along Windham's Main Street and the Willimantic River, ushering in a new age of manufacturing for the tiny town. Between 1821 and 1828, business owners had constructed 6 cotton factories in town limits! The Windham Textile & History Museum tells the story of Windham and Willimantic's growth through exhibits (including a replica of a house that belonged to a local working family) and community events.
Constructed in the early 1900s, the pedestrian bridge over the Willimantic River connects the Willimantic section of town with the rest of Windham. Within half a mile of the Willimantic Footbridge are dozens of shops, restaurants, and points of interest, including the Burton Leavitt Theatre, Willimantic Brewing Company, and the Main Street Historic District.
4th of July Boom Box Parade
One of the best cultural events in Connecticut started after no marching band could be found for Windham's 1986 Memorial Day Parade. But thanks to Kathy Clark, a local resident and parade enthusiast, the idea of a "people's parade" (complete with radios blaring marching band fanfares) was born. The Boom Box Parade made its debut just in time for the 4th of July.
Today, anyone wearing red, white, and blue can march in Windham's Boom Box Parade — so long as they bring a radio tuned to the local station, WILI!
