Single women are purchasing condos and homes at more than twice the rate of single men according to a survey by the National Association of Realtors (NAR). According to the survey, single women comprised 18 percent of all sales last year as compared to only 7 percent of single males. Single women are the second largest group of home buyers, after married couples.
According to the survey, influencing factors for single women buyers include rising rental prices and that single women are more likely than single men to view buying a home as an investment.
Single women tend to buy their first homes at an older age than men —34 years old compared to 31 years old—according to NAR's research. This difference is attributed to the wage gap that still persists among male and female earners. The survey also indicates that single women tend to pay more for their home than single men —$185,000 compared to $175,000.
