Autumn Events in CT to Check Out

Autumn FoliageThere is something for everyone to enjoy every season of the year in the Greater Mansfield Storrs area of Connecticut. Storrs is home to the University of Connecticut’s main campus, and the football stadium is nearby. While the 1934 mascot ram stealing hijinks of yesteryear are probably a thing of the past (details are available in the UConn Library archives under “The Ramnapping Incident of 1934”), the team rivalries are alive and well.

College and neighboring towns enjoy their fair share of prosperity, culture, and activity. Along with football, there are many athletic events to cheer for and enjoy a little good old fashioned fun. There are also classical music events, medieval fairs, candlelit tours of a haunted 18th century homestead, kid-friendly Halloween costume contests, and an adult-friendly craft beer Halloween costume contest. Here are some autumn events in CT to check out this year in greater detail.

UConn Huskies Football: The Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field is in East Hartford. You will be a short drive from the stadium when you find your perfect home in Mansfield, CT. The Huskies have won 25 conference championships over the years. The team is rebuilding and working hard to win another.

The team is trying to put their underdog status behind them for good. Hiring Jim L. Mora in 2021 might be the winning ticket. Coach Mora has been coaching in the NFL since 1985. He served as assistant defensive back coach, defensive back coach, and defensive coordinator for several NFL franchises. He worked as head coach for the Atlanta Falcons and the Seattle Seahawks. He moved on to NCAA college ball, working as head coach for the UCLA Bruins from 2012-2017, and now he is on our side. Pick up your tickets, prepare a tailgating feast and enjoy the autumn air (and if all goes well, celebrate the thrill of victory) at a UConn Huskies football game this autumn. Family section tickets are $7 + a ticket fee for the November 4th, 2022, game against UMASS. Root, root, root for the home team!

Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts: Music, dance, and entertainment are just a hop, skip and jump away for residents in the Greater Mansfield Storrs area of Connecticut. Buy a ticket, sit back, relax and let the dancers do all the jumping this autumn. University of Connecticut’s main campus is in Storrs and is home to this cultural treasure enjoyed by students, faculty, staff, and local residents. Every year Jorgensen Center presents 25-30 performances from national and international artists. The performances range from classical music to world music, classical and contemporary dance, comedy and family programming. Sometimes they throw a magician in the mix for good measure.

Pumpkin Passage: The Dinosaur Place in neighboring Montville is offering its annual toddler-friendly Halloween event on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings through October 29th, 2022. It is billed as “lights instead of frights”. Your youngest family members will celebrate the season with a trail of lights and glowing dinosaurs, bounce houses, fire spinning shows, and inflatable ax throwing.

The Connecticut Renaissance Faire: The 24th annual Connecticut Renaissance Faire in Lebanon, CT, is open for your medieval entertainment Saturday & Sunday through October 16th, 2022. Tickets are $15 for visitors ages 16+ and $10 for ages 7-15. Admission for children 0-6 is free. There will be jousting, Shakespearean comedic performances, armored combat demonstrations, and educational programs for your little ones who aspire to become medieval knights. Costumes are not required, but highly encouraged and a wonderful way for the whole family to celebrate the Halloween season.

New England Air Museum: The aviation museum in neighboring Windsor Locks, Connecticut features some interesting and engaging educational programs throughout the year. This year, for the first time, they will be serving up beer from craft breweries and holding a costume contest in the hangar for the 21+ crowd. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd, 2022 from 7:00pm-10:00pm. Your $50 general admission ticket includes unlimited beer samples, museum admittance, and a chance to win great prizes when you are dressed for the occasion (you’ll need a costume).

For the younger crowd, the museum is holding a”not-so-spooky” Halloween event earlier the same day. Kids can enter the costume contest, build a “bat glider”, and enjoy a festive scavenger hunt. The “Haunted Hangars Halloween Event” is scheduled from 10:00am-2:00pm on October 22nd.

Nathan Hale Homestead: Enjoy a candlelight tour of the late 18th century Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry, CT. There have been several sightings of ghosts. George Dudley Seymour, a Connecticut lawyer, bought the property in 1914. He and a friend saw the ghost of Reverend Deacon Hale (Nathan’s father) through a window. Nathan’s brothers, his sister-in-law, and a servant of the Hale family are also said to haunt the grounds. The ghosts have caught the attention of Syfy channel’s Ghost Hunters.

“Things That Go Bump in the Night” will be held on Thursday & Friday nights October 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28. Admission is $25 and is not recommended for children or the faint of heart.
